Brush Millipedes

$10.00

We are proud to annouce that our Brush Millipede captive breeding pilot projectrr worked! now we have the results of that to share with you all!

Brush Millipedes (Spirobolidae sp.) are one of the larger, common species kept in Australia. A typical juliform type millipede with long cylindrical bodies however slower to grow/breed than some other species coming in at 8-10cm as adults. Like all millipedes they are detrivores that are vital to the ecosystem, eating decaying organic matter like rotting wood and leaves, converting it into nutritious plant food and soil components. Along with other bugs like isopods, they stop the amount of rotting material from building up on the forest floor which would cause all kinds of food chain disbalances, illness and general ecologiocal collapse. Where they differ from isopods is they go much deeper into the subtrate, doing a great job keeping the soil aerated and stops it from compacting.

Our juliform type millipedes are all sold at the 3cm+ size mark, this is because of 2 reasons: 1) once they reach adult size, it is hard to keep track of all their individual ages in commercial breeding systems, we don’t want to run the risk of sending you an elderly millipede who passes of old age a couple weeks or months after purchase, thats not fair at all. 2) we prioritise keeping a certain amount of adult sized millipedes at any given time to ensure the colony has enough critical mass to breed at a rate and grow up at a rate that we have them generally available year round.

All livestock orders are sent via AusPost Express on Mondays/Tuesdays. Care guides and reading information about millipedes and their husbandry can be found in the “Library” section of our website.
