General Springtail Care
Firstly, thank you for your purchase!, these little guys are grown with love as part of our very own family! We are certain you just want to throw all the packaging out and get on with it but there are two reasons not to throw this paper out; 1) you should recycle it and 2) we have listed out a care guide and FAQ below to get you started! Best wishes and good luck with your new bugs!
Lighting:
Springtails don’t require light to achieve any of their biological processes so zero UVB or light spectrum requirements, like most living creatures they benefit from a day and night cycle for long term health so the ambient light available in a house is perfect
Heating:
Springtails prefer 18-27 Celsius so unless you live in a particularly extreme environment then anywhere indoors will be fine, cooler temps can be achieved by storing inside places like a closet, warmer temps can be achieved by sitting the tub on a heat pad.
Food:
In the wild springtails eat decaying biological material such as rotting leaf litter as well as mould and fungi. They enjoy things like raw grains of rice, oats and other things but for ease of care Ominous Cloud Works have created a powdered formula that covers all dietary needs of many springtail species, your package has included a small bag of this food, more can be purchased on the online shop
Tank Set Up
Any conventional container, tank even Tupperware will do. As long as it has a good lid and seal. We recommend charcoal cultures for beginners. Wash enough horticultural charcoal in rain or spring water (not tap water) to fill your desired container at least 5cm deep. Fill the container with around 2-3cm of the same water. Ventilation is important, we recommend creating vent holes and covering with a very fine mesh (we like to use Micropore tape for ease)
